Motorcyclists can now arrange insurance with DIRECT Pojišťovna too
DIRECT Pojišťovna, a.s. is expanding is product portfolio. In addition to vehicle insurance it is now also offering Motor Third Party Liability and CASCO for motorcycles. DIRECT Pojišťovna has thus now joined a select, small group of insurers on the Czech market offering a specialised motorcycle insurance product.

“The number of motorcycles on the Czech market is rising significantly faster than the willingness of insurers to meet the specific needs of motorcyclists. We have decided to change this situation and offer motorcycle enthusiasts a custom-made product, to which we have added, uniquely on the market, insurance for plexiglass fairings. With us, in addition and included in the price of the insurance, motorcyclists will receive assistance services in the event of an accident and insurance against the bad state of the roads” says Zdenka Pelikánová, CEO of DIRECT Pojišťovna.
860,131 motorcycles were registered on the domestic market as of 31/12/2007, or 12.64% of the total number of registered motor vehicles. The average age of the motorcycles in the Czech Republic is currently around 32.5 years (over 80% of motorcycles are over 10 years old), but this figure is gradually falling.
Road accidents involving motorcycles currently make up around 1% of the total number of road accidents caused by drivers of motor vehicles. In 2007, according to statistics from the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic, motorcyclists caused a total of 2,128 accidents. 114 motorcyclists died in these accidents (see the table). The highest-risk group is young riders aged between 24 and 30.

DIRECT Pojišťovna, a.s. is an insurer with an international ownership structure specialising in the direct insurance sales model (i.e., insurance by telephone and over the Internet). It obtained its licence for the Czech Republic from the Czech National Bank in the spring of 2007. In May 2007 it began offering Motor Third Party Liability on the Czech market, and in August 2007 expanded its range to include CASCO. In the coming years it will begin offering other types of non-life insurance.
The sole shareholder of DIRECT Pojišťovna, a.s. is the company Intouch Insurance Group B.V. (formerly GDII B.V.), which in turn is 50% owned by the Israeli DIFI (Direct Insurance Financial Investments) group and 50% by the British RSA (RSA Insurance Group).
